15. Time

In ancient China
people did not measure time
with ticking-hand clocks.

A stick of incense
the length of some man's thigh bone
burned the day instead.

Hours pass in camphor,
patchouli, champa—the ghost
of time is sniffing.

Today is first spring
the air reeks of bumblebees
and I can smell time.
